Discover Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle. The famous Haut Koenigsbourg castle is the most visited site in Alsace and one of the first in France. The castle is an emblematic place of Alsatian historical and cultural heritage. The current name of the castle, “Haut-Kœnigsbourg”, is the adaptation of the original name, in German “Hohkönigsburg” which translates as “high king’s castle”. It is one of the most beautiful testimonies of a mountain fortress at the end of the 15th century. It overlooks the village of Orschwiller and the vineyard, at an altitude of 757 meters, just west of Sélestat.
From the top, on a clear day, the panorama is spectacular but the interior of the castle is worth the visit. A drawbridge and beautiful stairs lead to the house flanked by wooden galleries and dominated by the immense keep. The trophy room and the army room, the empress’s bedroom and antechamber, the Kaiser’s room (known for its frescoes), the west bastion are all spectacular places that will impress you. In 2008, the castle celebrated the centenary of its restoration. It can be visited in all seasons.
